Tate Rosner McRae was born on July 1, 2003, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Her father, Todd McRae, is a lawyer specializing in oil and gas, while her mother, Tanja Rosner, is a dance instructor . At the age of four, Tate's family relocated to Oman due to her father's work commitments. During their three-year stay, she attended The American International School Muscat (TAISM) and began recreational dance training .

Upon returning to Calgary at age eight, Tate intensified her dance training, competing with Drewitz Dance Productions. By eleven, she was training in various dance styles at YYC Dance Project, a company owned by her mother, and also received ballet training at the School of Alberta Ballet . She attended Western Canada High School and completed her education online in 2021 .​

Tate's breakthrough came in 2016 when she became the first Canadian finalist on the American reality TV show "So You Think You Can Dance," finishing in third place .
